about

This song was written to be the last song on the record. We had played a show the night before and one of the bands we were playing with played a song that absolutely grabbed me, one because it sounded amazing, and two, because it was so transparent. It was an incredible song that triggered a bit inspirational creativity to write a song that had the same kind of power. I decided that the transparency would come in story form as if someone was observing me from above. I had the chorus pretty quickly which created a platform to write the verses from. To adequately capture what I wanted to do, I had to stand in both shoes at different times without abandoning either shoe altogether. Thus the dialogue that occurs between the verses and the chorus. When we brought it to the studio we wanted to create a song that allowed the narrative to unfold naturally. So we tracked the first verse with just one acoustic guitar in the live room to create a very organic sound, and we stepped up the instrumentation from there starting with another acoustic and building all the way to full band. The end product was exactly what we'd hoped it would be. The hope that comes with perfect love.

lyrics

the day has turned cold
I trace my steps back to the place we called home
and the dreams of this town
provide quite an escape for now
but you’ll be home soon
I hope

the city with its lights of gold
for now looks so pretty
for now have your hold
and could it be
that you’re better off without me
it seems you’ve done alright

I’ll never let you go

careful love you may get just what you want
to be left well enough
but honestly what kind of love would that be
to leave you falling
I have a choice
I’m not constrained to beg for you
how would you like me to hold you to your words?
you’re not that tough

I’ll never let you go
